Scherbel AdventuresThe Scherbel Family's Adventures in Tegucigalpa, Honduras 2月28日 Valentine's DayThis year for Valentine’s day we did something special. We went to a baptism. Consuelo (15) is the youngest sister of Alba Luz. She has been living in a small town called Morolica with her mom until this year when she moved to Teguc to go to school. There is not yet an LDS church in Morolica and so she was unable to take the missionary discussions and join until now. She took most of the charlas in our home and we enjoyed reading the scriptures and discussing things with her. BTW, listening to Carrie read the scriptures in Spanish is quite amazing. She asked Paul to baptize her and the cool thing is that Paul was also baptized on Valentine’s day in 1982. It was a great night.
Central MarketWell, Sarah finally went to the market. We have lived in Tegucigalpa for 2 years and she never had the guts to go. She's sad that she wasted so much time as it turned out being a great experience. Though Paul's glad that she hasn't gone a lot. She went with her friend/neighbor, Milli. They parked right outside the big open-air market, and paid a boy to follow them around with a wheel barrow type cart. They strolled along the stalls looking for the freshest vegetables and prettiest flowers. The prices were low that she didn’t feel the need to barter, even though her Spanish is good enough that she could now. She came home with some veggies, some beautiful flowers that look like chenille rooster combs, and a fresh coconut. The guy at the coconut stand opened it and chopped off all the brown parts with his machete right in front of them leaving only the soft, edible white part. It was amazing to watch him trim off all the brown without breaking through to the juice. When she got home, she cleaned it up a bit and poked a straw through it for Lauren to try. Then she poured the rest of the juice into a cup, it nearly overflowed, amazing! She also took pictures of her pretty flowers, which gave her the overwhelming feeling that she is indeed turning into her mother.
Science Fair
Carrie’s class science fair projects this year were on soil; the different kinds and their attributes. It was very fun to listen to her explain the scientific methods they used. Sydney went with us and enjoyed making balls out of the clay soil. She also enjoyed playing in the real sand outside Carrie’s classroom. This was great fun until she buried her sandals “to keep them safe,” but then could only find one when it was time to go home. 2月4日 Land for SaleReluctanlty, we are looking at selling off a beautiful section of land that we own in Star Valley, Wyoming. If anybody would be interested in taking a look at it, please let us know. It is a fairly large lot that borders a gorgeous stream on one side and a mountain on the other side. We have added a new photo album to this blog with some pictures of the land. The album is called Star Valley Land For Sale. We have also started a new blog specifically for this housing development at http://rockbridgemeadows.spaces.live.com. Again, if anybody has any questions about it, please let us know. 1月21日 Dodgeball and JeopardyLast weekend we were very busy with several Embassy-related functions. On Friday, we invited everyone over to our house to watch our good friend, Val, on Jeopardy. She did great and we had a fun time cheering her on while trying to yell out the correct answers, I mean questions, ourselves. After that we went to a going-away party for another friend. What a fun night it was!
The next day we had a Dodgeball Tournament at the Ambassador's Residence. It was a lot of fun, too. We played dodgeball several months ago in conjunction with a big Sports Day that we did. Personally, I didn't think it would be very popular, but it was, so we decided to do it again. We avoided any major injuries and I think everybody had a really fun time.
Also that night we got together to watch the Dodgeball movie at our house. Mind you, Dodgeball is rated PG-13 and is not be appropriate for children under 13 (or really anyone else for that matter!). But it was still kind of fun.
We should also mention that we changed the theme of this site to the "Tropical" theme because we are in the process of getting certified to SCUBA Dive and are planning one or two trips to the Bay islands before we leave. For anybody who dives or is interested in trying it, Honduras is supposedly one of the best places to dive in the world and it's surprisingly inexpensive to learn and dive here.
Anyway, take care and remember that "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!" |
